Enlightened Princesses is an art book based on an exhibition that explores the lives of three German aristocrats in the British Court who are on the cusp of the Enlightenment period. Zoe explored how the small design nuances of this monograph work to establish a royal mood, such as the gold accents and traditional binding strategies. These aesthetic elements are an excellent example of paratext, which occurs when design choices are infused with content and support a reader’s comprehension. Zoe visited Miko Books, a publishing company that works to infuse the spirit of an exhibition into their book designs. She sat down with Rita Jules, a senior graphic designer, to better understand what stylistic choices Miko Books is in charge of, and how such choices reflect subject matter.
