Issue One of Sniffin’ Glue, a punk zine created by Mark Perry in the 1970s, is a bare-bones publication which Perry assembled using a children’s typewriter, black felt tip pen, stapler, and a Xerox machine. People who aligned themselves with the punk movement were attracted to the simple, basic presentation of Perry’s content as well as his honesty and authenticity communicated by his content and visuals. In her research, Sophie delved into how zines were a staple in punk culture as a means of reviewing bands, sharing information on gigs and shows, and developing the punk aesthetic and ethos. In conversation with Alida Jekabson, Sophie learned about how zines provided an alternative to mainstream coverage of punk music and goings-on in the punk movement.
